UNPFII Side Event to Explore Implementation of Article 32 of UNDRIP
A timely and important side event at the 25th Session of the United Nations Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues (UNPFII) will focus on advancing the implementation of Article 32 of the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP).
Titled “Implementing Article 32 of UNDRIP: Indigenous Self-Determination Through Indigenous-Led Initiatives, Co-Management and Co-Stewardship of Natural Resources, and the Emerging Rights of Nature Framework,” the session will bring together Indigenous leaders, scholars, and practitioners from around the world to share perspectives on strengthening Indigenous self-determination and governance over lands, territories, and natural resources.

Organized by Land is Life in collaboration with the Indigenous Peoples Law & Policy Program (IPLP) at the University of Arizona and the Yale Center for Environmental Justice, the event will explore practical pathways for implementing Article 32 through Indigenous-led initiatives, co-management frameworks, and evolving legal approaches recognizing the rights of nature.
The session features a distinguished lineup of speakers from across regions, including representatives from Indigenous organizations, international institutions, and academia. Among the speakers is Elisa Marchi, Program Manager of the Indigenous Rights & Protected Areas Initiative and Professor of Practice at IPLP, contributing IPLP’s work at the intersection of Indigenous rights and environmental governance.
This side event reflects a growing global focus on Indigenous-led solutions and reinforces the importance of centering Indigenous knowledge, leadership, and legal frameworks in environmental stewardship and decision-making.
