About

The Indigenous Peoples Law & Policy Program (IPLP) Initiative On Indigenous Rights & Protected Areas aims to raise awareness, establish an online resource center, promote collaboration, provide legal support to affected indigenous communities, and follow up on recommendations regarding Indigenous peoples impacted by protected areas and conservation measures.

About the Initiative

album ur Aim

Conservation is a global concern, yet it often marginalizes Indigenous peoples who have long protected the biodiversity now deemed "protected areas." As the UN Special Rapporteur emphasizes, “those areas were more protected when Indigenous people lived there,” reflecting their sustainable practices and deep connection to the land. Our aim is to reframe conservation by upholding Indigenous rights and enabling them to continue safeguarding these vital ecosystems.
